Based in Clarksville, TN ClixSense is a popular program that pays people to view ads. The basis is showing ads which are selected based on the users selected interests. Alternately, advertisers can go through ClixSense to pay for their sites to be viewed, and their ads to be clicked.
There are two ways to use ClixSense -- free and premium. Premium accounts cost $10 for one year, and provide the user more opportunities to view ads and therefore make money. The sales pitch says ads run from $0.01 to $0.10 per click, and up to $5.00 for every 30 seconds worth of work (each ad must be viewed for 30 seconds before another can be clicked). There is an affiliate program, which pays a small amount for every new signup, and more if that person upgrades to premium. Premium users get paid further down the downline as well, up to five levels deep.
There are some other opportunities as well, with a clix game that is like a sweepstakes, which usually just show more ads, but apparently can result in money made as well (which is apparently where the $5 per 30 seconds comes from, although we never won).

AK spent the first two weeks on the free account. His review: The good points were the simplicity, and it was nice that it could be done while doing other things. I clicked ads while playing online games or just generally surfing the internet. It was zero effort. I loved it for this reason. The bad part is that there were only 5-10 ads available per day, 98% of which were $.01, so I made less than a dollar for my effort. Upgraded to premium and got more ads. I got a few referrals from marketing, but still made under $10.
TS played big money and went straight for the premium account. His review: I got about 450 ads with the premium account, but they were really 15 ads repeated over and over, which got stale. Many were the annoying type that wouldn't let you leave without clicking 3 popup windows. I clicked these while working on other things, so it wasn't too tough. Made my money back in about a month. Now it's pure profit -- at about $1 a month! :P
SG spent 3 days on free before moving to the premium account. Her review: I focused more on the marketing for affiliates and managed 30 referrals, of which 11 upgraded. This made me about $13, and hopefully I'll continue getting a few more down the road. I'm actually pretty happy with the program for the amount of effort required.
Analysis --
(2/5 stars)
We actually love ClixSense. This is a legit business, not a scam, they pay out as promised and don't promise to make you rich. It requires in your terms of service that you acknowledge it is not a get rich quick scheme, which it certainly isn't.
You won't make much money, unless you are a crazy marketing wiz that can sign up thousands of people a month. However, it is zero effort, kind of fun, and you don't have to lose sleep about whether or not you're cheating someone or doing something unethical. Putting out marketing can result in a few referrals that will pay for dinner once a month at least.
Scam Factor --
(1/5 threat level)
No cost, no risk. Payouts as promised, just don't expect to make much.
Dollars per hour equivalent --
(1/5 income possibility)
$1.00 This is actually hard to calculate, because each ad has to be watched for 30 seconds for $.01, but in reality each click is just about 2 seconds of 'work'. Even at 4 seconds per click, that would make it around $900/hr if you calculated it that way. We calculated at the maximum rate you could actually make... assuming 60 clicks per hour at $.016 per click. Affiliate marketing is not included, as that will vary by effort and skillset.
Effort required --
(1/5 effort)
Easy, sort of fun work for basic. Promotion requires some more effort, depending on knowledge level.
Experience required --
(3/5 experience level)
None for basic. Intermediate for promotion.
